Do’s and Don’ts Before Undergoing a Laser Vision Correction Procedure

November 9th, 2022

Laser vision correction will introduce you to a new world of clear, sharp vision. Furthermore, after laser vision correction, you will get to experience a more carefree life without the worry of contact lenses or glasses.

You’ll want to ensure that your surgery goes smoothly, your recovery is fast, and that you’re back to your regular routine in no time. For this reason, it’s essential that you follow the recovery instructions your eye doctor gives you.

Keep reading to learn some of the do’s and don’ts to follow before undergoing a laser vision correction procedure!

Don’ts

Here are some things you should avoid doing prior to your laser vision correction procedure:

1. Don’t Wear Contact Lenses Prior to Your Procedure

If you’re a contact lens wearer, your eyes will need a break from these visual aids before surgery. Depending on the type of contact lenses you wear, they can cause the shape of your cornea to change temporarily.

Your eye doctor will want your cornea to be in its natural shape for the best results after laser vision correction. For this reason, you’ll have to wear glasses for a week or two prior to your procedure.

2. Don’t Ignore Your Eye Doctor’s Instructions

You’ll be given detailed material to read before the laser surgery procedure. If you’re armed with information, you’ll know what to expect and go into the procedure feeling calmer and with a better understanding of what will happen step by step.

Don’t build on your anxiety by not reading the information and instructions you’re given in advance.

3. Don’t Apply makeup, Perfume, Lotions, Cologne, or Aftershave

It’s best to avoid all of these things on the day of your procedure. It’s also best to avoid wearing anything in your hair.

Your eye doctor will want you to wear something you are comfortable with during the procedure. However, avoid wearing clothing that might shed lint, such as wool.

4. Don’t Eat or Drink Anything Before Your Surgery if You Are Instructed Not To

Your eye doctor may ask you to avoid eating or drinking anything the day of your surgery. If this is the case, make sure you follow these instructions, or your surgery may have to be rescheduled.

Do’s

Here are some things you should do prior to your laser vision correction procedure:

5. Do Have a Friend or Family Member Lined up to Take you Home

Even though the laser procedure is fast and relatively painless, your vision will likely be blurry after the procedure. For this reason, your eye doctor will require you to arrange for a friend or a family member to escort your home.

6. Do Pick Up Any and All Required Eye Drops Beforehand

You’ll likely be prescribed eye drops to use after your procedure. It’s best to pick these up early, so you have them ready to use after your laser vision correction procedure.

7. Do Dress Comfortably

After the procedure, you will be able to go home to rest. It’s best to wear something comfortable on the day of your procedure.

Consider wearing clothes you can fall asleep in. You don’t want to have to change immediately when you get home.

8. Do Drink Plenty of Water

It’s best to drink plenty of water the days leading up to your procedure so that you will be well-hydrated during surgery. This will also help with any discomfort you may have afterward.

Planning and preparing for your laser vision correction surgery is an exciting process. What lies ahead is a bright and clear future for you and your eyes!
