4 Tips For Healthy Screen Use

Most people rely on the internet for part of their livelihood. Many more enjoy using screens to play games, chat with friends, or complete research.

Computer vision syndrome is a combination of symptoms that stem from several things. These are lacking proper lighting, bad posture, screen glare, and viewing distance.

Remember To Take Frequent Breaks

It’s easy to get caught up in whatever you are doing and forget to take care of yourself. Taking small but frequent breaks make a big difference!

Not only will they help you become more productive, but they also help keep your eyes and body healthy. Make sure to stretch, take a small walk, and refresh yourself before coming back.

Practice Good Seated Posture

Sitting for long periods of time can be disastrous for your back, neck, and shoulders. Even if you are taking enough breaks, you can still feel stiff and sore at the end of the day if you’ve been slouching.

Make it a habit to correct your posture whenever you notice it slipping. Over time, you will do it without even thinking!

Screen Distance

This is one that many people get wrong. If you have bad vision, it can be easy to get really close to your screen so you can read easier.

What this actually does is put an enormous amount of strain on your neck and eyes. Your screen should be no closer than 20 inches from your face.

It should also be tilted at a 20 degree angle away from you, with the top of your computer at or below eye level. You will likely find that this helps with your posture as well.

The 20-20-20 Rule

The number 20 seems to be a recurring theme in healthy screen use. The 20-20-20 rule is an easy to remember way to keep the muscles in your eyes relaxed.

Set a timer for 20 minutes (remember to make it silent if you are in the office!). When it goes off, look at a point about 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

This simple task relieves a lot of pressure on your eyes. It can also help you maintain the ability to change focus lengths. You may be busy, but everyone has 20 seconds to spare, we promise!
