People usually have a lot of questions about LASIK surgery. They want to know how expensive it is, if it will hurt, and how long their recovery will take. But many patients don’t ask the most important question of all:

Am I even a good candidate for LASIK?

Of course, only your doctor can help you answer this question. But to help you get started answering this question, here are four signs you may be ready for LASIK:

  • You are an adult with stable vision

In order to be a good candidate for LASIK, you must be an adult with stable vision, meaning your prescription has stopped changing. Why? Well, it doesn’t make much sense to spend thousands of dollars on LASIK only to have your vision worsen next year.

Different doctors will have different requirements but in general, it is recommended that your vision remain stable for a minimum of a year prior to surgery.

  • You don’t have any health complications

Certain health complications may rule you out for LASIK surgery. For instance, women who are pregnant should wait until they are three months postpartum before having LASIK.

And uncontrolled diabetes or autoimmune disorders could disqualify you as a candidate for LASIK. And make sure you let your doctor know about any recurring eye problems that could interfere with LASIK.

  • You are ready to ditch your prescriptive eyewear

Do you find the contacts or glasses repeatedly interfere with your life? Does it affect your ability to engage in sports and other activities you love? Do your contacts continually irritate your eyes and exacerbate your allergy symptoms?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions you may be ready for LASIK.

  • Your doctor gives you the go-ahead

If you want to know whether or not you are a good candidate for LASIK you should schedule a consultation with your doctor. Your doctor can address some of your concerns about LASIK, evaluate your medical history, and help you decide if LASIK is right for you.
