Punctual Plugs

Punctal plugs may be used to close the drain where tears leave the eye and go down into the nose. This increases the amount of tears in the eye. These work well in eyes that are not inflamed but need more water.

Plugs are placed using special tools. They may be temporary or permanent. Temporary plugs dissolve over time, from 2 weeks to a few months. Permanent plugs will remain in place indefinitely.

Plugs may fall out, and can be replaced. Some plugs are visible while others are placed completely into the drain and are not visible. If they cause irritation, it is simple to remove those plugs that are visible. Those that are not may be flushed through. They are typically covered by insurance.
